Chalets with Mountain Views
Highbourne Cottages has two chalets: Protea Cottage and Aloe Cottage. Each features a private bathroom, fully equipped kitchen (camp toaster, French press), gas braai, and a fireplace (guests bring their own wood). Free WiFi is included. The outdoor shower offers views of Cathkin Peak. The cottages are off-grid, powered by solar panels, so no energy-intensive appliances are allowed. Water comes from mountain streams; guests should bring potable water.
Self-Catering Only
There is no on-site restaurant. The fully equipped kitchen in each chalet allows guests to prepare their own meals. The gas braai (barbecue) is available for outdoor cooking. Local restaurants and shops are a short drive away in the Cathkin Park area.
Hiking and Outdoor Activities
The property provides direct access to hiking trails such as the Sphinx, Blindman's Corner, and Crystal Falls. Nearby activities include ziplining, horseback riding at uShaka, and the Falcon Ridge Bird of Prey show. The sun terrace and a picnic area by a stream are available for relaxation. No spa or fitness center is on site.
Near Drakensberg Mountains
Highbourne Cottages is located at the end of the R600 road, near the Monk's Cowl area of the Drakensberg. It is 200 km from Pietermaritzburg Airport. The driveway is steep and rough; a 4x4 is best, but a regular car can manage with care. The R600 has potholes, especially at night or in rain. Free off-site parking is available.
Host Communications Only
The host (Lindsey or Brett) communicates via WhatsApp before and during the stay. Caretakers visit daily to maintain the property. There is no daily room service or housekeeping during the stay. No business center, kids club, or concierge is available. Guests need to bring their own firewood and potable water.
